View Full Version : Your definition of PUNK
We live in an age were every single musical
genere gets bastardized...
And one that had the worst beaten is the "punk" term.
So, my question is... what do you consider to be "punk"
this days? Wich bands you hear and you say "wow, they
sound so punk! so agressive!"?

I like old school punk like the sex pistols but today most of what is called punk is either punk pop or Ska-ish. So, like I consider Rancid punk. Greenday is the granddaddy of punkpop..sum41 is an example of the Greenday inspired sound.

fear, wasted youth, circle jerks, dk, black flag, ramones, 999, and the list of old school could go on all day.
what about some new "punk" bands? I could use some recommendations. punk pop and ska need not apply in this case.
sure:cool:

I mostly hear old school bands, and i´m not really in touch
with the new bands that pop out, since most of them fall
in the pop-punk-ska-melodic-rap genre (yes, all together)..
But there is some kickass stuff out there..
US Bombs pops into my mind right now...

Yeah, that is what I meant by saying most of what people these days take as punk is Ska. Still, I love Ruby Soho..bounces around my head frequently. Ska is really on the up over here again..I like the sound and I like punk so the marriage usually works for me.
Tell you this much, they are much closer to punk then Avril.
My hubby did PR work for the Sex Pistols back in the day. He was one of the folks the got arrested on the boat going down the Thames. You can just see him in the clips they always show of it.

THAT is punk :)
Wow... I'm impressed... more people have better musical tastes than I thought in this business.
Not only is the word "punk" misused and abused but the true definitions of "ska", "hard core" "old School" etc. are just as abused and misused. I've been listening to what could be considered "punk" for over 20 years... yeah I know ... EVERYONE is an expert. :) Anyway... this is a topic I could debate for hours but will spare you all :)
Bottom line is though... and I definitely dig the majority of the bands listed above... mostly the ones that thrived in the 70's, but the TRUE roots of punk started in the 60's... zillions of obscure garage bands who never got any airplay. Too many names to mention. One of the best punk bands ever though... The Monks. Hands down. Check em out... 5 american military guys stationed in Germany in the mid 60's cutting a record... their shit is UNMATCHED.
That's my opinion and I'm sticking to it :)

FEAR
FEAR 1982... took my friend's mom's station wagon(ex guitar player "spiral stares" of Pavement) for a two hour drive to the big city of San Fran. My first big city show.
Pratically crapped my pants getting into the pit and barely made it out alive. Awesome show with the minute men. Very fucking scarey...
ahhh right time right place ;)
